VLV Forges de Clabecq – Borderland

Pierre Zeytoune

Presentation of the site:

The site is located on the edge of the city on the previous logistics site of Forges De Clabecq. There is a still standing hangar which is oriented parallel to the Canal because nearly 50 000 tons of coke was discharged there per year, so the unloading and sorting of the different coke quality was done in this same hangar.

As mentioned earlier the choice of the proximity with Canal was a strategy to save time. Today it’s making a distance with the city and its inhabitants who are deprived to walk and enjoy the space that lies there.
So we will try to bring a solution that reconnects these inhabitants with the landscape of the canal in order to redinamise the area. To which is added the proximite of the seine which is a component in full of the site and that brings a diversity of interesting flora to make greening the site

As for the accessibility, the site has as neighbor a parking that covers the seine so in the first time it’s possible to access it easily by car. Concerning the bike the hangar is connected with the south of vilvoord by a bike path along the canal. Finally, different Lijn bus lines leave a stop in front of the school and the clinic.

The idea of the proposal here was to create a new entrance for people who come by bike or by foot, which gives an identity to the whole.  Then the spaces are organized in a way to occupy the space on the southern side to release a maximum north side to enjoy an outdoor covered space. We can imagine markets where we finds products of the local farmer or products of the potage that will be put in place juste near.

For the space in the north, it includes working, sleeping and learning spaces that can be reserved for young students during a week of initiation or awareness-raising about the nearby industrial environment and Its reconversion. Or maybe to youg apprentice how can during a week learning outside the school setting and expertise by making personal projects.
